The BSMT program aims to:

 

         The general program educational objective is to produce competent merchant marine officers and qualified to pursue professional career or advanced studies in related maritime field of specialization:

     

 

  a) Produce competent merchant marine navigational officers on seagoing ships of 500 gross tonnage or more and qualified to pursue a professional career or advanced studies in related maritime field of specialization

 

The BSMT program graduates are expected to:

 

a)     A graduate of BSMT shall be able to demonstrate the ability to perform the competence, at the operational level under Table A-II/1 and some elements of Table-A II/2 of the STCW Code. 

b)     Engage in lifelong learning and understanding of the need to keep abreast of the developments in Maritime practice. (PQF level 6 descriptor):

c)      Communicate orally in writing both English and Filipino

d)     Work  independently and in multi-disciplinary and multi-culture teams, (PQF level 6 descriptor);

e)     Act in recognition and practice of professional, social, and ethical accountability and responsibility; and

f)       Preserve and promote “Filipino historical and cultural heritage” (RA 7722)

g)     Apply knowledge in mathematics, science and technology in solving problems related to profession and the workplace;

h)     Evaluate the impact and implications of various contemporary issues in the global and social context of the profession;

i)       Engage in lifelong learning and to keep abreast with developments in the field of specialization and/or profession;

j)       Use appropriate techniques, skills and modern tools in the practice of the profession in order to remain globally competitive; and

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Provides foundational knowledge and skills necessary to perform seamanship and engage in shipboard operations.

 

COURSE  OUTCOMES (CO)

CO1. Differentiate the various parts and principal structural members of the ship in terms of their characteristics, functions, and contribution to the maintenance of ship's seaworthiness.

CO2. Construct a functional chart of the shipboard organization in accordance with the minimum manning requirement.

CO3. Construct the procedures and order of events for anchoring and other mooring operations in accordance with safe working practices.

CO4. Construct the procedures for using deck equipment, machineries, and cargo handling gears with safe working practices, and their maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s manual.

CO5. Steer the ship and comply with helm orders and with respect to correct procedures.
